Find a visual language for the idea.
Decide what the image must communicate
Is the illustration explaining a process, suggesting a mood or making an abstract idea visible? Agree on that purpose before collecting style references.
Make references specific
Describe what you like about a reference: its composition, colour relationship, texture or degree of abstraction. Asking someone to reproduce another artist’s signature style is less useful than discussing the visual problem.
Agree on the practical details
Confirm dimensions, cropping, territories, duration of use, revision rounds and delivery formats. Separate ownership of the original work from the licence to use it.
